What is mindfulness?

What is mindfulness?

A participant on my latest mindfulness course asks:   What was the underlying principle behind all we discussed on Monday about finding the stillness /silence behind the thoughts? Tapping into that quietness and letting it calm mind and body? The under – and over – lying principle is to train your mind to focus on the here and now, moment by moment. The simple Truth is, there is only now… This, here, now… and now… and now.. is where life unfolds. The past has gone; the future hasn’t happened. In learning to be here fully with our awareness vs. regretting the past and worrying about the future – neither of which exist! – we naturally begin to relax, open up, respond vs. react...

'Cleansing' the minds of the UK's top beauty editors

‘Cleansing’ the minds of the UK’s top beauty editors

Last week, I visited the offices of 11 glossy magazine beauty journalists as part of a Sakura Spring Clean promotion by skincare brand Biore, and organised by the lovely ladies at Beautyseen PR. My part in proceedings? To treat the journalists to a private 20-minute ‘mind-cleansing’ session. First I walked them through my favourite grounding exercise. Then, once in their body (that’s to say, less in their head) and calm, they learnt a powerful positive visualistion technique for transmuting negative thoughts and feelings. Over two days, I gave sessions to journalists from:  Red, Marie Claire, Grazia, More!, Heat, Company, Woman, Reveal, Essentials, Closer, and S Magazine (Express). Satisfying work on improving inner beauty. Thank you, ladies.

WATCH: Interview with me about mindfulness, the body, trauma, and transmuting the lower self

Here, eloquent New Zealand-based mindfulness teacher Peter Fernando and I explore the importance of the body in meditation why not being mindful makes us sick how to find the refuge of pure presence and much more. We also share our (now!) funny stories of having our egos crushed by our teachers. PS. Fifty minutes long, it’s best listened to in one go; so press play when you have an hour to yourself. (Apologies it’s a bit rough around the edges aesthetically; the content makes up for it).
